What's That Thought? The Art of Simply Noticing

I’ll never forget a conversation I had years ago. A friend of mine was describing how frustrated she felt - stuck in the same patterns, no matter how hard she tried to change. She’d say things like, “I’m just not the kind of person who gets lucky,” or “Things like that don’t happen for me.”

At one point, I gently asked, “Have you ever noticed how often you say things like that?”

She paused. Thought about it. And then said, “I didn’t even realize I was doing it.”

That moment stuck with me - because I’ve seen it over and over again.

Most of us are thinking limiting thoughts on repeat … and we don’t even notice.

The first step to real change? Just noticing. We all have these automatic thoughts running in the background:

"I always mess things up."

"I’m not that kind of person."

"That’s just who I am."

They’re so familiar, they don’t even stand out anymore.

But what if you started paying attention? Not fixing, not analyzing - just becoming aware.

Because without awareness, those thoughts keep driving your choices without you realizing it. Awareness is powerful. Think of it like standing at a train station.

Most of the time, you’re jumping on the first train of thought that arrives, without checking where it’s headed. But the moment you stop … And watch the train pull in …

And realize, “Oh, there’s that same old thought again …”

You’ve created space. That space gives you options. And it all starts with simple awareness.

A small invitation for today. If you’d like to try it, here’s something gentle. A few times today, pause and ask yourself, "What thought just went through my mind?" No need to change it. No need to judge it. Just notice.

You’ll be amazed how often the same limiting patterns pop up - ones you might never have seen before.
